Beverly Hills 90210 was not a show I had grown up watching as I was only around 9/10 when it first aired and never got into even during my teen years, however it has stood the test of time as a fun primetime soap opera.

SERIES SYNOPSIS

Beverly Hills 90210 — Join BFFs Brandon (JASON PRIESTLEY), Kelly (JENNIE GARTH), Dylan (LUKE PERRY), David (BRIAN AUSTIN GREEN), Steve (IAN ZIERING), Donna (TORI SPELLING), Val (TIFFANI-AMBER THIESSEN), Brenda (SHANNEN DOHERTY), Clare (KATHLEEN ROBERTSON), Noah (VINCENT YOUNG), Janet (LINDSAY PRICE), Matt (DANIEL COSGROVE), Gina (VANESSA MARCIL) and Carly (HILARY SWANK) as they navigate life from high school and college to life on their own – all the hookups, breakdowns, betrayals, dreams, ambitions and passions.

BH90210 — Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Shannen Doherty, Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling reunite when some suggest it’s time to get a “Beverly Hills 90210” reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast attempts to continue from where they left off. The seven former teen idols play heightened versions of themselves in the brand-new serialized drama, with a healthy dose of irreverence, that is inspired by their real lives and relationships with each other.

VIDEO – 3¾/5, AUDIO – 4/5

Paramount releases Beverly Hills 90210 and BH90210 onto DVD, the former shown in its original televised 1.33 full frame aspect ratio while the 2019 version was in 16×9 enhanced widescreen. In terms of the first series, I found it to look more than adequate, it’s not terribly sharp but considering it aired in the 1990s, was at least halfway decent and some okay colors showcasing that wonderful 90s attire. The later one looks better with brighter colors which is to be expected for a newer series.

In terms of audio, the first series comes with standard Dolby Digital 2.0 tracks, again adequate for a show like this that is strictly dialogue and some choice music or score of its time. The 2019 iterations has Dolby Digital 5.1 track; a tad more dynamic but not much.

OVERALL – 3½/5

Overall, Beverly Hills 90210 was not a show I had grown up watching as I was only around 9/10 when it first aired and never got into even during my teen years, however it has stood the test of time as a fun primetime soap opera aimed at teens and 20-somethings. The “Ultimate Collection” released by Paramount is just that, ultimate, with every episode of both series and is a must for any fan, though only if you don’t already own every box set.
